Without volunteers, A.W.A.R.E. could not operate. We used over 300 volunteers during the last year. Prior experience is not necessary; you can be an asset to our organization if you are willing to participate and learn. Volunteers can help in a variety of ways, depending on a person's interest and abilities. The majority of our volunteers work with clients. They serve as a horse handler or as a side walker (review the Volunteer Handbook for job descriptions). However, other jobs are also available…clerical, grooming/bathing horses, mechanical, lawn care, stall care, etc. Most volunteers spend 1 ½ to 2 hours per week volunteering at A.W.A.R.E. They help groom and tack horses, help with the class (l hour in length) and untack horses. Training sessions for new volunteers are held at the beginning of each riding semester (typically during the months of January, June and September).  Our calendar of classes shows the class times and number of volunteers needed per class.

WHAT TO WEAR

Volunteers should dress appropriately. Tennis shoes or boots are acceptable footwear. Jeans or shorts are acceptable, depending on the weather. These items should not be worn: shorts that are very tight and short, jewelry that may temp small children to grab and pull, tops that are revealing. In some classes we are working on socially appropriate behavior for head injured adults and the wrong clothing can increase the problems encountered during class.

HOW DO I BECOME A VOLUNTEER?

Call the A.W.A.R.E. office and talk with our staff about attending a training session or visiting our program. Leave a detailed message if we are outside in the arena.
