A.W.A.R.E
was the dream-child of a special education teacher named Cathy
Hovey. She started the riding program in 1984 with five horses
and five riders. The program was incorporated in 1986 as a
not-for-profit and will soon celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Currently the program is serving clients from the following
counties: Hays, Travis, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Caldwell,
and Gonzales. In 1994 A.W.A.R.E. became the proud owner of
a large covered arena, office, twenty acres and a pond due
to the generosity of two San Marcos families.
The program operates Monday through Saturday. The year
is divided into three riding sessions-Spring (13 weeks),
Summer (9 weeks), Fall (13 weeks). The minimum age of clients
is two years of age, without an upper age limit. A.W.A.R.E.
currently provides service to clients with a variety of
disabilities such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation,
traumatic brain injuries, stroke, autism, etc.
A.W.A.R.E. is an accredited center with the North American
Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) and has certified
instructors.
RIDER FEES
The hourly fee is $25-$40 per rider, depending on the required
reports required. Agencies requiring detailed reports prepared
by instructors are billed at a higher fee. Riders must attend
an entire session (13 weeks in the spring, or 13 weeks in
the fall or 9 weeks in the summer).
DIRECTIONS
A.W.A.R.E. is located south of San Marcos. From Interstate
35 take the Center Point Exit. Turn East on Center Point.
This puts you between the two Outlet Malls; Center Point
divides the two malls. From the stop sign between the malls,
continue east ½ mile and A.W.A.R.E. will be on the
left side of Center Point. It is a large yellow and white
covered arena. There is a large AWARE sign by the front
gate.
